Gameplay

Grand Mystic Quest of Discovery is set in a "place of forbidden things". The player has to guide the spellcaster around the various rooms to acquire the four spells necessary for helping him to reach the six pieces of treasure.

The game's progress is saved automatically from the last room entered. The spellcaster will be placed at the door he used to enter into that particular room.

When the player has obtained all six pieces of the treasure, they need to go back to the room that the game first started in. A larger opened door with a coloured outlined shape will be visible within its frame. When the spellcaster reaches the opened door and enters it, a blank screen with text on it is displayed. The footnote appears after the epilogue.

Spells

Spells are powerups that grant the spellcaster abilities. Each spell's use is assigned to a different key. For spells that create an item, only one its item can be in the room at a time. The player must remove the item by pressing the spell's corresponding button while the spellcaster is next to its product. Items created by spells are automatically removed when another room is entered into, and the player can use the same spells once again in the subsequent room.

  • Block spell - Creates a single block that can be jumped onto.
  • Hammer spell - Allows the spellcaster to shoot hammer-like projectiles and destroy cracked blocks.
  • Ladder spell - Creates a ladder that extends to a certain height. It will automatically cut off when it hits a stone turret or a shorter ceiling.
  • Feather spell - Slows the spellcaster's vertical movement while in the air.

Interactive objects

  • Scrolls - Display messages and sometimes hints to guide the player.
  • Ladders - Connect a series of elevated platforms to each other.
  • Switches - Activate moving platforms.
  • Cracked blocks - Blocks with multiple fractures on them that can be destroyed

Hazards

  • Acid droplets - Let drops down from the ceiling.
  • Stone turrets - Fire a single projectile at a time in a horizontal direction.
  • Water - Divides some elevated platforms from each other.

Notes

  1. Created for Ludum Dare 19, December 17-20, 2010.
